This was a tiny pencil doodle on scrap that was intended to stay that way but, lesson never learned, I had to put ink on it and thats when the trouble started. Needless to say, Sergio Aragones hasn't got anything to worry about from me. Or anyone else, come to think of it.

Crap boards and inkwash are a terrible combination at the best of times. When your patience is low, they are an infinitely worse combination. I'd either make a terrible penciler or, by being one, have a drastically less stressful, if less interesting, life.

PS. I'm sticking to inking.

I'm ashamed to say I never liked drawing Spidey all that much until I was paid to do so. Now I enjoy the character more than most.

On a side note, I'm not sure if they use bags with dollar signs on them or gold dubloons anymore, but they are a hell of a visual aide.

I have always been a straight up sucker for the old school blue/yellow color scheme of the X-men's uniforms and if the opportunity presents itself, I will usually draw them in those digs. There have been a few incarnations of Illyana as I understand it, including something in Google Images that made me shake my head tonight, but this one always rings most true for me.

On an end note, I made the huge mistake of double checking this costume when I was polishing up the inks and happened upon Bill Sinkiewicz's take on Magik. Needless to say, I was inclined to tear my own in half.

X-Force vs. Apocalypse Commission.

This one took a bit of fiddling to make work, but I'm pleased with the results. Team shots and, by association, team books are challenging and my hats off to the artists who pull them off well and regularly. Apocalypse is always a fun draw and I believe it was my first time drawing Angel. In fact, I thought the feather-winged Angel was still being used. Shows how out of the loop I am. On the flip side of the coin, however, and I mean no disrespect to whoever created him, but this Fantomex character.... yikes.

Hawkeye is strangely popular. Never saw the big appeal of the character myself, but to each his own. Mockingbird was a first however, and surprisingly fun.

I was a big fan of the storylines that swirled around Galactus' heralds back in the late 80s and into the 90s. Always crazy, always epic and always full of Silver Surfer and, if I wished really hard, Adam Warlock. Anyway, Airwalker was a severely underutilized character. How about a comeback? Perhaps with myself on art duties, hrmm?

Finally blasted my way through the last of a particularly troublesome batch of bristol board with this sketch, with results below satisfactory. I've never had a sheet more stubborn and incapable of taking a smooth wash, and I'm glad to be rid of it. Still, I enjoyed the drawing itself and the character, to boot.

This will likely be the last of the Halloween sketches, for which I'm slightly relieved but a little sad. I might squeeze in one more, but chances are slim. I've been meaning to get to a Jack The Ripper piece for quite a while, but never thought of the right scenario. I watched the 2001 film for the first time since its release and was much less kind about it than my memory told me I originally was. There wasn't anything slap-in-the-face bad about it, it was just a bit of a narrative mess. So, to use the old chestnut, the book was better. It was an Alan Moore book, of course it was better.

Dog Soldiers is one my guilty cinematic pleasures, although it shouldn't be guilty at all. Its not a perfect film by any stretch but its hands down better than most of the yearly bags of shit Hollywood leaves on theater doorsteps each year. Simple, direct, gory and well acted, I enjoy it every year.

Superman, Batman, Spider-Man. Pick any hero, add in random artist, and it will look like said random artists interpretation of someone else's creation. Not so with Hellboy. It seems, at least to me, that no matter who draws Hellboy and no matter how clearly its their art, it still looks at least a bit like Mike Mignola drew it. And I think thats pretty awesome.

The Beast of Gevaudan is a fascinating legend and one I'm surprised hasn't been mined more often for great fiction. After Brotherhood of the Wolf, I'm glad Hollywood hasn't tried its hand, as it would most likely fuck the whole thing up. And, lets be honest, if there's any way to improve on two and half hours of listening to Monica Bellucci speak French, I can't think of it.

Anyway, I felt in the mood to draw a creature, and the visceral and spooky Beast of Gevaudan certainly fit the bill. Growl.

This list was passed along to me and after some review I thought I would share it.

Let me qualify that I myself have not read each and every one of these novels, though I do agree with the first 5, particularly "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by a personal favorite towering literary mind, Oscar Wilde. I think we can all relate to the obsessive, possessive, even dangerous nature of having your life consumed by artistic perfection. Thought I hope none of my fellow artists or, for that matter, readers have gone to any of those extremes.

You can bicker about the order of the list I suppose, but they all belong there somewhere.

Do yourself a favor and hit the used book store, your iPad, e-reader or other technological doodad and get to buzz sawing your way through the 50 Greatest Novels for Art Students.

I sketched out a predecessor to this particular piece that, while irreverent (not to mention funny enough to make me laugh out loud), was not in the best taste. It wasn't explicit, but age has taught me the value of keeping my trap, and sometimes my sketchbook, shut because you never know who may be watching. But speaking of watching, you can use your imagination as to what it is I might've drawn.

Regardless, this was a fun little 5x7. While drawing it though, I realized that in possibly the entire realm of fiction any character or group of characters known as the Watchers always interferes. For any future fiction, lets come up with some new names, shall we?

If you pay attention to only one of my blog posts, or if you want to make it to middle or even old age (whichever is applicable) without walking like Dr. Frankensteins assistant, follow the colorful picture above. Spending anywhere from 8 to 16 hours a day chained to an artists table takes its toll, even if you're like me and spend half of it drawing while standing. But there are ways to cheat the inevitable spinal warping.

Try to roll it up 20-30 times, 3 times a day (you'll get there).

You don't need a gym or a fitness trainer or even me telling you how to do it. Just save your spine and do it. Please. I'd prefer to see you wheelchair-less at SDCC 2045.

I'm not sure which surprises me more; that the Blob is still wearing his Jerry Lawler style wrestling trunks or that some politically correct nitwit hasn't formally petitioned Marvel to remove the character entirely for being offensive to the morbidly obese. If the latter has actually happened, I'm a little less confident in the future of humanity.

Still, this is how I imagine a fight between the big fella and Nightcrawler would go.

I confess, I watched this great film when I was about 8 or 9, and was bored to tears. Luckily, age has replaced boredom with fascination and an appreciation for the art and scope of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, long though it may be. So, enjoy.

While I'm certain I'm in the minority here, this is probably my favorite of Kubrick's films, and boasts possibly my favorite piece of dialog in any film anywhere: "Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!".

Gil Elvgren.

Plain and simple, Gil Elvgren taught me how to draw women, and this particular Veronica Lake-ish painting is probably my favorite. I've been such a huge fan of Gil Elvgren for a long time, and get ever so slightly riled up the more I hear people prattle on about Norman Rockwell. Let me be clear, every bit of the praise heaped on Rockwell is unequivocally deserved and I own volumes of his work. Its human nature I suppose to pick out the best of a crop or era, but also unfair, especially to an artist as talented as Gil Elvgren was. Certainly, the two have different styles, but they were different classes of art as well and I suppose that accounts for some of the reason he's overlooked so casually.

Its hard to imagine a life consisting mostly of hiring women as stunning as Elvgren had to stand in various stages of undress for hours and hours and hours, but he did it, and my hat is off to him.

Bottom line here, if you're an aspiring comic artist or have any problems drawing the ladies: Find a book of Elvgren paintings (preferably one with "behind the scenes" photographs and sketches. Buy it. Study it until the covers fall off.

Sorry its not a comic artist love-fest in here today folks, but its not usually what I look at when the creative batteries are ebbing, as they have been the past few weeks. So, if you require your art to have any sort of guns, explosions or exaggeratedly proportioned ladies, you might want to step out.

This isn't an art analysis blog entry, just an appreciation of where modern illustration draws its composition from (or at least I seem to).

The first two are from the tremendous repertoire of Polish painter Edward Okun. The third painting is by the French artist and phenomenal costume designer of the early days of film, Manuel Orazi.

I don't often draw Bats, but tonight I made an exception. Frankly, I get a little tired of both seeing him skulking on rooftops (no matter how great the artist is) and drawing him skulking on rooftops (no matter how good I think my particular rendition is). That may sound like a betrayal of what makes Batman Batman (see: skulking on rooftops), but the fact is, he's limited. At least you can draw Superman picking up meteors, sitting on the moon or juggling planets, but Batmans repertoire is relegated to standing on gargoyles, jumping off gargoyles and landing on street hoods. I chose the latter.

Side note: I still want to draw a Batman book. After all, who doesn't???

After a long, crazy day yesterday I set out to do a little doodling. Thanks to Victor Gischler wonderful left-field suggestion, I wound up with this. I'm not so great with Disney's likenesses off the bat, and fitting them into another universes' likeness is even harder. Still, it was loads of fun once the idea popped into my head.

Juggernaut is just one of those characters, like the Hulk, that I never get tired of drawing. I'm hoping for a crack at him sometimes soon, anyway. And well, Colossus'Kitty Pryde can be really tough. Not because of her look, which is clean and simple, but that damnable phasing thing she does. You miss one line, and the whole thing doesn't work.

Someone suggested this after my recent string of samurai themed doodles, and I acquiesced. Its difficult to draw any character from Sin City and not ape the style in some form or fashion and, I admit, I reveled in the opportunity. The second, however, is decidedly me.

An exercise in brush-pen which, incidentally, I'm finding less and less useful the more I try to incorporate it into my work. Portable and convenient, yes, but the line doesn't hold up under reproduction nearly as well. It is, however, perfectly adequate for random details that require quick, unrehearsed flicks of the wrist.

I've been on a bit of a samurai kick lately but frankly, they do tend to blend one into the other after a while. Dress, armor and uniform don't have much variation from the Edo Period to the Meiji Era and when its not in a narrative, it can get mighty dull. As a bit of a deviation, I took on a classic; Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo!

This sketch screamed "put some color on me" when it was still in my head and as we're all slaves to our own artwork, I obeyed.

Zatoichi, for those who haven't seen it, was one of the better pulp-y samurai series of films from the 70's, and also had a respectable re-incarnation in the last five years or so. Not nearly as camp as say, Hanzo The Razor, but very fun in its own way.

I said it once before, and I'll say it again now: Firefly is like that summer fling you wish you never had, because you never got to see that girl again.

When the Science Channel began re-airing the first, and regrettably only, season of Firefly this past week, I had a mighty urge to doodle. At first, I had a cracking good likeness of Mr. Fillion but the more I looked at it, the less it looked like I drew it and that didn't sit too well with me so I cartooned it up quite a bit and made it a bit more.... me. Unlike past artists, I had no intention of simply lightboxing his face.

I'm afraid if you haven't seen the film, this great character known simply as the "The Landlady" in Kung Fu Hustle will probably be lost on you. However, much like my previous post, OLDBOY, it is highly recommended that you do. Very different films, but equally great in their own ways.

Not sure what put this one in my head, but it was lightning in a bottle when it did. One of favorite flicks, and one I'm desperate not to see remade by Will Smith (though it seems likely). If you haven't seen OldBoy I strongly suggest you do unless, of course, you have a weak stomach.
